What is the best kind of brush to use on a Yorkshire Terrier?

  • I need to buy a brush for my Yorkie. There are different kinds and I was hoping that someone would let me know what they think works the best for a Yorkie's coat?

  • A comb that is called a course comb (has wider gap between teeth), then use a finishing comb ( has teeth closer together). After that use a slicker brush. These will keep the hair from matting. Just using a brush doesn't work.

  • i have a terrier/spitz mix and i brush him with a pin brush that i bought from the rabbit aisle! it's smaller and easier to handle and works well!

  • they sell a brush at wal-mart that has two types of bristles on each side. i'd recommend that for any type of dog.

  • A good pin brush with a rubber back that is soft is an excellent grooming aid also because the pins are longer to reach through the coat. Do not buy a brush that has small balls on the end of the pins as they tend to pull at the Yorkshire Terriers coat and break it. Please do not use brushes with nylon bristles because they tend to break the hair.

Here are some good ones at Petsmart:::::::

  • I like to use a medium/coarse comb (solid metal comb with wider spaced tines on one side and finer spaced tines on the other), a pin brush without heads on the pin (this is because the heads shred the coat), and a flea comb. Slicker optional.

First I gently take the pin brush through the entire coat, noting any tangles. Then I take the wide section of the comb and comb through, and then the finer section. When you come to tangles and snags that are just dead hair stuck in the ends of the coat, bring the snag out with the comb, place your thumb on top of the snag, and grab the hairs beneath the comb (to keep it from tugging at the dog's skin) and yank it out. There will be tiny little snags that don't want to come out in the comb -a slicker brush is great for getting these off.
Take the flea comb and comb hair all around the eyes, face/muzzle/forehead. This helps remove gunk from the corners of the eyes.
Don't forget nail clippers! Yorkies have black, but semi-clear nails... look at the nail from the side -you can often see the differance between the quick and the rest of the nail.

Oh, and a hint, for those boogery eye stains at the corners of the eyes -go to the feed store and get a small bag of Terramyacin powder, and mix about 1/2 a teaspoon into 32 oz of water for your yorkie. When the tear stains you've noticed, have dissapeared, slack this off to supplying him with the Terramyacin only twice a week. If it reappears, use more, if it keeps off, decrease to once a week.

Oh, get some kidde rubber bands (found in the baby section) for holders for the top knot. Take the comb and comb the hair from the corners of the eyes and forehead upwards to the top of the head and secure with a few twists. Best to re-do his top knot every other day, at least. Cut the rubber band when you take it out, being careful not to sever any hairs, and gently comb out the top-knot and reapply.

Hope I helped! this is how I groom my yorkie and shih tzus coats.
I also like to use pantene pro-v shampoo and conditioner on them, and I also add coconut oil to their hair. A little spritz of hairspray after you have the dog all combed out and the hair parted down the back can work wonders.

Wow... give a person advice about how to take care of their dog's coat, and you get thumbs down... nice. FYI -this is all information that I have gleaned over the years from various books, groomers, and breeders.
